a synthetic wig should have a lifespan, right? the wig this love letter is dedicated to has been in my life in one form or another for the past 9 years. she’s been ugly, beautiful, long, short, up and down but she’s always been in the rotation. I’ve been more or less building a kit of wigs for years now and this one in particular may be the one that’s been worked the most. I hope this is where this wig’s styling journey ends and she can now enter a stage in her life where she’s ready to be costumed and appreciated, as of right now though this is another stop on the timeline of the life of the wig in my collection that refuses to die.
I remember when buying her the only motivation for the purchase was the fact that she was on sale on EpicCosplay at like 50% off or something. she was called “Gaia” and she was a ponytail wig with a long thick bang and tendrils on the sides. she also came with a detachable ponytail extender, which was basically a U shaped piece of mesh tulle with a few wefts of 20 inch hair attached to it. she’s still on the website in a pigtails variation which is what I posted here for reference:
basically, she was very ugly, but the ugliest units need the most love.
first of all I want to make things very clear: I hate a bang wig. well, I don’t hate them and actually I love them but I would never buy one, even though I did at a discount. I like the option of adding my own bang to a wig and when a wig already has a bang I feel I have to work around it and I’m limited in styling. second of all this being a cosplay wig, I knew it was going to be a labor of love. cosplay wigs aren’t always the best but by this point I had come to like this particular websites synthetic hair colors so id been a return customer. hence, the allure of a cheap wig to save on shipping costs. I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do with it but I knew I wanted as many different wigs to create as many different characters as possible. it sat in a closet in its original packaging, in a trunk in a closet for a few months before I had and idea of what I was going to do with it.
back then one of my special interest were the original seven girlfriends of the Playboy Mansion. Holly had just released a memoir on life as a girlfriend a few years prior and I was having fun decoding the names of the women she’d written about. in my research I was constantly looking at and reading stories about different women who had lived at the mansion. obviously, I was always struck by the hairstyles, and one in particular id noticed reappearing on different girlfriends throughout the years: a huge mass of teased up piled high curls with tendrils cascading down the sides. it was always a huge, elaborate, and as white as founding father hair. this is the perfect style for my lil’ reject wig!
